For my latest image Lost, I used the 3D feature in Photoshop to create the text. Previously, I had opened the feature and quickly closed it again – this time I took my time to learn enough to bring my vision onto the canvas!
I am currently in the process of staring at approx. 2 to 2 1/2 hours of footage (at 5 times original speed that is) from this experiment. And I’m realizing, my process of learning something new (as well as applying things I’ve learned before) is super chaotic…
How do you go about learning something new?
I really want to create a tutorial [format to be determined] that shows how I go about learning new things. At the same time I know it might be super particular to the way my brain works and maybe therefore not make too much sense to anyone else… But I would really like to bring some structure into all of that – even if it might just benefit my need to create this and not have anything useful to offer anyone else.
How do you do it?
And also not to forget: why?
Why do you learn new things?
Because you have that nagging feeling it is expected? Because it is actually expected? Because you are just itching to know this? Because you need to know this in order to get from point A to point B?
The first one I can see a lot going round these days as we are all in the grips of the covid crisis. It feels like some people are getting more or less bullied into learning something new – aka “doing something productive” with this forces downtime – by everyone but themselves. There are countless adds o instagram (and probably on other social media as well) that want you to “seize the day”, “not let the opportunity go to waste”, or whatever else they can come up with …mostly to sell you their tutorials.
Yes, I get it, everybody needs to make a living.
BUT it is my deep believe that if you just learn something because you feel obligated to, next to nothing will stick and it’s going to be a giant (and frustrating) waste of time…
What are your thoughts on this?
I think it is well worth doing a tutorial about…
